Jo-Anne Charette started the cross country program at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School in 1988 and coached until 1995. She had triplets in 1996 which curtailed her coaching career for quite a few years. She was happy to start again as the Fairhaven High School Cross Country Coach in 2007, and she has been coaching ever since. Budget cuts had to be made in 2009, and due to low enrollment, the school did not fund cross country. Coach Charette fundraised to keep the program going. In 2011, after reading the sports preview in The Standard Times, FHS 1992 graduate/cross country athlete Lyle Drew took on the cause by organizing the West Island 5K. The fundraiser has been a huge community success. As a result of its success, cross country seniors are given $500 scholarships for participating in the program. To date, eight seniors were awarded cross country scholarships.
